Our theme for this year's Science Festival is
Up Close and Personal with Fluorescent Fruit Flies
Mitochondria can be tracked in animals using a fluorescent protein. Scientists from the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit will showcase their research into neurodegenerative diseases through a demonstration showing the behaviour of fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). We will show how mutations in mitochondria might lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and motor neuron disease. We will also use games and puzzles to demonstrate the techniques used to assemble millions of DNA sequences in the genetic diagnosis of patients with mitochondrial disease.
