Mitochondrial traffic and its impact on neuronal function

Mitochondrial transport in neurons is disrupted in many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and motor neuron disease.

Using fruit flies, I am investigating how this mitochondrial traffic is directed: I take movies of mitochondria moving in the neurons of the flies and look at how mutations that cause diseases in humans affect mitochondrial mobility. Our goal is to use our new discoveries about the biological processes that lead to neurodegeneration in order to help discover new ways to treat these severe diseases.
