During the cell cycle, the morphology of mitochondria changes from a highly interconnected network, permeating throughout the cytoplasm, into a vesicular or “fission” state, formed also during apoptosis. The fission state shown above was induced in a transformed human osteoclast cell line by treatment of the cells with a small interfering RNA species directed against a nuclear encoded subunit of ATP synthase.
