The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a postdoctoral scientist to join Dr Julien Prudent's Mitochondrial Physiology research group in the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit in Cambridge.
The postholder will work within a programme entitled "Mitochondrial dynamics and inter-organelle contacts in metabolism and death". Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles constantly adapting their shape through fusion/fission events, to ensure their physiological functions. A critical discovery in the field of mitochondrial cell biology has been the identification of transient and specialised molecular structures connecting mitochondria with other organelles. Numerous inter-organelle contacts have been identified and functionally linked to mitochondrial functions, including apoptosis and cell survival.
The goal of the project is to understand the regulations and functions of mitochondrial dynamics and inter-organelle contacts during cell survival and death events. Developing biochemical, cell biology and advanced microscopy methods, the post-holder will undertake research to study mitochondrial ultrastructure, relationship between inner and outer membrane division and organelle contact sites adaptations during different metabolic states. The associated-mechanisms regulating these morphological transitions will be investigated.
Candidates will have (or be about to be awarded) a PhD (or equivalent) in biochemistry, biophysics or molecular biology, and a track record of related research achievements. Knowledge in mitochondrial physiology, including dynamics and metabolism and experience in collection and processing of confocal microscopy data, including live cell imaging is essential.
The MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit is a world-renowned centre for research in respiratory enzymes. Additional information can be found at www.mrc-mbu.cam.ac.uk.
Fixed-term: This is a fixed term training programme post for 3 years from date of appointment.
