Abigail Giles receives The Richard J Bing Award for Young Investigators

At the recent World Congress of the International Society for Heart Research, held in Japan, Abigail Giles was awarded The Richard J Bing Award for Young Investigators.

Abigail studied for her PhD at the MBU, funded by the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Partnership Program, spending her time split between Cambridge and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA.

Through her collaborative project, supervised at the MBU by Professor Mike Murphy, Abigail developed optical techniques to monitor mitochondria redox centers in the models of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury to advance the understanding of cardiac pathophysiology. Her research was primarily focused on method and technical development, requiring strong attention to detail.

Abigail graduated last year and is now a postdoctoral scientist in Bethesda, developing novel optical approaches for detecting mitochondrial-derived biomolecules in vitro and in vivo, which will advance the understanding of cardiac physiology.
