MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit

The Unit is delighted to announce that Judy Hirst and Mike Murphy have been elected Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Fellows are elected based on their outstanding contributions to advancing medical science, cutting edge research discoveries, and translating developments into benefits for patients and wider society.

Judy Hirst, Interim Director of the MBU, is a Professor of Biological Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and leads our Mitochondrial Complex I research group. Judy is best known for her groundbreaking work on the structure and function of complex I in health and disease.

Mike Murphy is Professor of Mitochondrial Redox Biology at the University of Cambridge and runs the Unit’s Mitochondrial Dysfunction research group. Mike’s work on the origin and consequences of mitochondrial oxidative damage is having a significant impact on many areas of biomedical science, notably heart attack and stroke.

We congratulate Judy and Mike on this recognition of their work – and that of their colleagues in the Unit and their many collaborators.
