MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit

From the Regius Professor of Physic and Dr Rob Buckle, Chief Science Officer at the MRC

On behalf of the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the University of Cambridge, we are delighted to announce that Professor Judy Hirst has been appointed as the next Director of the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit.  Judy has been the Interim Director since 1 April 2019 when Professor Massimo Zeviani stepped down.

Judy has been at the Unit since 1999 and became Deputy Director in 2014.  The international standing of Judy’s research is evidenced by her elections to a number of prestigious fellowships – the Royal Society (FRS) in 2018 and the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 2019.  She also won the Royal Society of Chemistry Interdisciplinary Prize: “Awarded for combining structural, biochemical and physical chemical techniques to pioneer studies of energy conversion in complex redox enzymes”.

We are sure that you will all join us in congratulating Judy on her appointment and we look forward to working with her to lead the exciting next phase of the MRC MBU’s development (following the recent strategic review) and build on its outstanding track record of achievement.
