Inspired by a collaborative review by James Stewart (Cologne) and Patrick Chinnery, published in September 2020, Nature Reviews Genetics has chosen an image designed by Patrick Morgan for its February 2021 cover.
The review entitled, “Extreme heterogeneity of human mitochondrial DNA from organelles to populations” casts light on the origin and spread of mitochondrial DNA mutations from the organelle to the human population. The authors explain how recent technological advances have uncovered an extraordinary level of mtDNA diversity in humans – from the cellular to the population level – which are relevant for ageing, neurodegeneration and cancer.
